I agree with you, Cameron, two-hundred-and-five fucking percent, that Mario games have gotten way too talkative these days. What the hell happened over at Nintendo? Do they take us all for retards now? Super Mario Bros. on the NES didn’t have any tutorials, and the damn thing was a pop-culture phenomenon. Here’s Super Mario Galaxy 2, a game that could easily be subtitled “Press A to Jump,” and it’s jam-packed with signs, text boxes, and little animals all shouting at you about how to play. It’s ridiculous. There are far more elegant ways to ease players into a game, and Nintendo needs only to look at Half-Life 2 to learn about them.
I recently replayed Braid, an extremely impressive 2d platformer, and the manner in which it introduces controls is very intuitive and easy. You just introduce simple scenarios that are only passable by using a a new gameplay mechanic, preferably accompanied by big signs with an arrow and a picture of the button to be used.
Portal was good at this as well.
I dunno, maybe the dvd is necessary for the coveted 4-8 year-old demographic?
For some reason this reminds me of the old VHS tape Microsoft was selling along with Windows 95. It starred members of the cast of Friends.
Somebody did say that the DVD had some of the neat little tricks and ways to play that were included in the videos bit of NSMBwii. I haven’t actually watched my copy yet.
People bitch and moan when Mario doesn’t have a “story” and then moan again when there is talky bits, bloody gamers we are never happy.
As a game it’s great I’ve found it a lot of fun (mild spoiler) and the return of a stage from a previous Mario game was amazingly well done.
I’m having trouble trying to find time to play my wii at the moment, what with the hours I’ve sunk into MH3, Galaxy and playing Lego Harry Potter with the rest of the family,(could be a great family game but it’s as glitchy as hell including several that kill the game) I’ve still not really got that deep into Sin and Punishment 2,(absolutely amazing old style game) and Metroid other M is out soon.
@Frostback
As I understand it:
The company that was making it for Lucas arts,(I want to say it was the same guys that did Time Splitters,Free Radical?) bit the dust after having it yanked from them and it all went a bit quiet after that. It was such a shame some of the stuff on space to ground combat looked great along with the art for sith Kenobi.
It changed to PSP/DS and it looks like the console versions have been quietly shelved.
Really? Man what a freaking shame! I’m not a huge lover of 3rd person shooters but running around with that classic music in the background was amazing.
And the Star Destroyer battle episodes were great… just amazing. I loved how you could take out a destroyer from the outside or from the inside – with a fighter/bomber or on foot by invading their launch bay.
Yep, I liked them as well, the flexibility of where you were and what you were doing was great.(ahem) And it had nothing to do with my partner coming home and finding me riding an at-st stompimg ewoks shouting DIE DIE YOU LITTLE FURRY BASTARDS, nope NOOooo-sir-ey nada zip zilch never happened…..
It’s a good job she is so understanding really.
Here’s the Darth Kenobi artwork I was talking about: http://xspblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/d0k2.jpg http://xspblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/darko1k.jpg
Lucasarts like to do that to their devs. They are the biggest cunts on the planet. Cunt#1 has recently left. They have very smelly cunts in their cunthouse which, as I have alluded to, is full of cunts.

Also, here are some videos that illustrate this point. Tim Rogers is a bit of a douche, but I like what he has to say here.

Heh, it just occured to me that maybe the DVDs are required for the gamers at the 60+ end of the spectrum…

i would have thought something that was actually playable on the Wii, would be less confusing

Hey, I just thought of something. When the hell is StarWars Battlefront coming out for the the 360? It was one of the best franchises ever.

It was a license to print money too.

I love this insidery-developer gossip.
Was Darth Kenobi an unlockable character? I don’t recall him.
It’s a shame to hear about Lucasarts…I have some fond memories of their games, going back quite a while.
