We lost game packs, these cool big ass cartridges with artwork on them that come in a protective sleeve in an artfully designed cardboard box that comes with a nice thick manual, a poster featuring pictures of the entire lineup of the system’s games, and a subscription card inviting you join the company’s Fun Club! We “gained” a mass produced universal plastic dvd case where the “artwork” is a piece of paper inserted under a layer of plastic wrap; the game contained on an unimpressive plastic disc comes with a 4-page manual where half the content is a seizure warning. Yay for technological advancement /sarcasm
Seriously, they cost about $.40 cents to make… If AOL could afford to mail 50 of these disc/cd cases to avery man, woman and child in the US and stay in business for 10 years, why can’t the game manufacturers pass a little of the savings on to us?
I remember when I bought by copy of Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy text adventure game. It came with a great “Don’t Panic” pin and lots of other cool stuff. I held onto that stuff for about 20 years.
I now recognize those extra items as the dust-collectors they are (I am *such* a parent now), but thinking back to how much I used to treasure that ‘stuff’ I can see how people miss it.
Apparently Valve did a presentation recently on data they collected while selling videogame at bargain prices. They came to the conclusion that videogame prices are too high and that they make more money selling more copies cheaply online then they do selling 60 dollar DVD’s in stores.
We’ve lost the ability to play any damn game we want to on any system without some arse telling us that it is a casual game as though it is some sort of sin just above shagging animals but below kicking kittens with steel toe capped boots.
Oh and the only 2D game I could think of for the last gen is Ikaruga.

Great topic!
I’d like to add that we lost health bars and gained Wolverine’s Healing Factor.
We gained wireless controllers and lost a lot of batteries.
We lost controller rumble on the PS3 and then gained it back!
We gained wi-fi compatibility! But then we lost our money buying wireless network adapters.
We gained motion control and lost our dignity.

Dignity is overrated

We lost simplistic arcade games then gained them back!
We lost angry-gamer.net and gained controller1!
We lost the PC. Jr and gained the netbook (now we’re going to lose the netbook to the touch-tablet).

Lost:
Clint! (Who can forget “Let’s name it ‘CLINT: the game!’, in all caps. Because from a distance it will look like ‘C*NT:THE GAME”)
Gained:
Ummm… Lisvender???

I’ll try to dig up the link.
