HA! I remember before there was arcades as well! Where I used to go swimming they had a submarine game where you stood on a little platform and looked through a periscope (sea wolf?).
I’ve always said that if money was no option I’d by one of the sit down Star wars vector graphics arcade cabinets.

All three were included on one of the Rogue Squadron games on the gamecube, I played them more than the proper game, they were just so much better.

I concur with Clint about the Street Fighter II phenomenon. There was really no point in waiting for a half-hour just to get lose to some scary looking Asian gangster who would just as soon beat you up in real life.
I liked arcade games that offered unique experiences, like Xybots, Spy Hunter, and more recently, Mocap Boxing. I enjoyed beat-em-ups like The Simpsons or Captain Commando, and the rare platformer like Midnight Wanderers or Black Tiger. The only light gun game I played in the arcade was Point Blank. I was a crack shot at that. I was good enough to beat it with one credit on the Hard difficulty. Not Very Hard, though; that was freakin’ tough. I loved that game. The arcade kids thought I was awesome.
I hated Mortal Kombat, but I loved Midway’s other games. Smash TV and Total Carnage are two of my all-time favorite arcade games. I also got addicted to NBA Hangtime, and its Create-A-Player mode. I loved seeing my character’s name climb the high score tables.
By the way, was the 80s TV show Starcade ever broadcast in Australia?
