Another fun and fascinating podcats. I agree that the peripheral craze is getting out of hand. Of course, there’s no one to blame for it but Nintendo. They’ve been throwing out useless peripherals since the 80s, from R.O.B. to the NES Max to the Super Scope to the Game Boy Advance/Gamecube connector to the E-reader to the Balance Board, and one of them was bound to be a success eventually. However, the Mii franchise that’s put Nintendo on top isn’t for me, and I think it’s funny to watch Microsoft and Sony try to catch up with them. By the time their toys arrive, the family/lifestyle market will likely be dying.
I’m glad that Nintendo wants to shake video games up with their weird little gadgets, but what I’m waiting for is the next big innovation in traditional controllers, something as big and lasting as the analog joystick. Motion control certainly wasn’t it, nice try though it was, and I don’t think infrared pointer functionality is all that great; I like to rest my arms when I play games. What about a mouse-like wheel or dial for weapon switching or camera control? What about an improved trigger layout that allows use of both the index and middle fingers at the same time? What about something that lets the computer know when you’re flipping off the screen?
Huh! Microsoft’s Natal might be good something after all….

I think people at Nintendo, MS and Sony have taken Minority Report too seriously. It was an ordinary movie and a shitty game. But then, the people who lap up the Wii aren’t the same people waiting for Modern Warfare 2
