controller1.com Focus Test STREET FIGHTER IV

Broken street dates are a wonderful thing. Cam adds another notch to his SF purchase Tally, Clint mashes buttons with skill and george sits in the middle confused by all of the pretty colours.

Great podcats! I’ve rented Street Fighter IV and I’m pleasantly surprised by it, though it’s not worth the $100US that the internets insist I spend to buy it along with a fucking arcade stick.

“It’s the only way to play the game, man!”

Button it, bub. I think it’s disgusting how arcade sticks are being built up as necessary to enjoy the game properly. The standard Xbox 360 controller works just fine. I’m sure the Dual Shock 3 works even better. Frankly, I think Capcom should alter Street Fighter’s fundamentals so they suit a four-face-button controller better than they do now, just as Midway did with Mortal Kombat. Evolve, people! Gaming has moved out of the arcades and onto the consoles! Embrace change! Is the fan backlash really so terrifying?

Peripheral pimping aside, I like this game more than I thought I would. Many of SF’s problems are removed or mitigated due to the adjustments IV has made to the formula. The computer AI is cheap, but not so much as it is in most other fighting games. The addition of Focus Attacks makes cornered fighters more dangerous. The 3D animation renders the obsessive idea of frame-counting obsolete. Super attacks are still too powerful, but they take longer to charge up than they did in previous SF games.

I would dare to say it’s the best Street Fighter game yet. I just wish you didn’t have to unlock half of the characters.

I just wish you didn’t have to fight Seth at the end. WORST CHARACTER EVER MADE EVER, INCLUDING EVERYONE FROM ROCK AND ROLL RACING
