The Games of Early 2009

At this stage we havea  pretty good idea of what games are coming out during the first quarter of 2009. Let’s have a  quickl look at what’s coming down the pipe over the next few months. I don’t know why I’m doing this since I’ll likley be spending the next few months finishing the games I already have but anyway…

Lord of the Rings: Conquest. This is A LOTR skin for Battlefront, which itself was a Star Warsified clone of Battlefield 1942. Penny Arcade have managed to destroy any anticipation for this game with a single comic. Oh dear.

Next up, oh looks its bloody EA again with Skate 2, the sequel to the game that made Activision’s multi-decade contract with Tony Hawk as smart as buying Ford stock. Skate 2 looks like an improvement on the original for those that loved Skate 1. At least its not called SK8 2.

Street Fighter IV. Capcom have finally realised Fighting Game fans can count to four. The important thing is that no matter how good or bad this game is or how it sells, Capcom will still be releasing Street Fighter 2 Extra Ultra Alpha Omega EX GTi later in the year.

Godfather 2. EA’s first take on the world of the Corleone family was like Fredo. A bit weak, ineffectual and plain useless. So which Corleone is this one going to be? Micahel? Sonny? Tom Hagen? I’m guessing Connie.

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. Could this game actually be the over the top Gears clone that does to 3rd person shooters what Saint’s Row 2 did to open world games- make them so stupid but fun that people love them more than the games their based on?

Killzone 2. Yes we made fun of it yesterday, but by many account KZ2 could be the shooter of a fairy shooter thin first quarter. Will it get people away from CoD4, Resistance 2  CoD WaW? We’ll see. There are a lot of people hoping for big things from this game.

Resident Evil 5.  Your black zombie killing simulator is coming in March. It has been likened to the Second coming of Christ, The End of WWII and Beatlemania reaching Finland in 1987. Did you like Resident Evil 4? If so put this in your cart. What’s that? You didn’t like RE4? Well, if you’re not part o fthe solution, you’re just part of the problem.

Guitar Hero Metallica. This will be interesting. People say GH Aerosmith tanked but for the band, they made more money of that than they ever did off of their studio albums.

F.E.A.R. 2- I o.n.l.y. a.d.d. i.t. h.e.r.e. b.e.c.a.u.s.e. I. l.i.k.e. t.y.p.i.n.g. p.e.r.i.o.d.s i.n. b.e.t.w.e.e.n. e.a.c.h. l.e.t.t.e.r.

Onechambra: Fap Squad. That’s not the full name of the game (one on Wii and one on 360) but it might as well be.

Halo Wars: RTS comes to the Halo Universe from a  developer who are being shut down as soon as the game ships.

Tom Clancy H.A.W.X.- This last Holiday season, the gaming industry reeled from the fact that the only Tom Clancy title on the market was the RTS End War. Well, the next Tom Clancy game is an arcadey fighter game like Ace Combat from the people who bought you Blazing Angels. The H.A.W.X. name is pretty silly but there you have it.

Ninja Blade. This game  is unlikely to be heard of ever again after its release in March. Let us speak of it no more.

Of course, the world has gone DLC mad. We have DLC for Fallout 3, Fable II, GTA IV. For some people (ie me) these look more interesting than the new games coming out.

I personally, sticking my own two cents am only looking at picking up KZ2 out o fthe above listed titles. Halo Wars will bethe first Halo game I won’t play. I know Cam will be heavily investing time in Burnout DLC and SFIV when it comes out. Clint will probably get whatever we least expect him to get and love that. After the last two years, I’m curious to see what there’s be for us to play later in the year.

Yeah so uhh, I might pick up the new Street Fighter and umm… Gears of War II? I haven’t played Crackdown yet. Oh who am I kidding, of course I’ll grab the Halo RTS… not for online play though… my ass gets kicked so hard in online RTSes.

Nothing else looks good to me.

Have you guys checked out You’re In The Movies, for the 360?

Speaking of Battlefront, when is a new one for the 360 coming out? I’m not a huge fanboy but with the variety of vehicles and soldier types and that glorious music playing in the background the Star Wars:Battlefront games have returned many many hours of enjoyment.

Battlefront III has had an interesting development. It was being made, not by Pandemic, who did the first two, but by Free Radial (Haze, Timesplitters). Apparently the project got yanked by Lucasarts and handed to another dev. Free Radical, just a few weeks ago, went in liquidation, most of the staff fired, etc. So Battlefront III may be a while.

    Well that bites.

    I hate Atari^H^H^H^H^HLucasarts.
