They were always a bad idea! I hate having to shove my thumb into my controller with full force to get a proper response from a game! I never played Pro Evo, but I know that the PS2 Grand Theft Auto games used them, and the PS2 Metal Gear Solid games used them, and I hated that. I don't know how anyone could get used to them, sports games or not. I hate pressure-sensitive face buttons! They were always a bad idea!
